CHAPTER 29

Once she was close to the bank, Kim looked behind. Behind her, on the broken bridge, the gangsters were still keeping watch. She could see the snout of two assault rifles pointing at the water. She felt the reeds move and watched Dan as he came up alongside her. They were waist deep in water now, but crouching to stay below water level in the reeds.

Dan whispered, “They have to look at both sides. Sure they have 2 guns on the other side as well. We don’t want all 4 guns firing at us.”

Kim said, “But we have to go at the same time. Whoever stays behind, dies.”

Dan nodded. “You first.”

Dan kept an eye on the bridge as Kim crawled forward. If they were spotted, he knew they were well within firing range of the rifles, which looked like AK-74’s. They would not survive. He kept wading backwards, turning his head to see Kim.

She got to the bank, and waited for Dan. He pressed himself against her on the muddy shores, still hidden by the reeds, which had become thicker. Large flies buzzed and flew into their faces. The water was warm, and steam rose off it, and there was a peculiar pungent odor.

“Keep moving”, Dan whispered. Kim got to the bank, and hauled herself over. Dan joined her. They lay on the ground for a second, expecting shouts and the sound of gunfire. Dan looked up. The gangster were looking around everywhere, apart from the banks.

Dan lifted himself up on his haunches. “Run!” he whispered.

Kim got up and ran. She was quick on her feet, but the sudden movement did not go unnoticed.

Gunfire rattled above Dan’s head. He did not wait, he got up and hurled himself in Kim’s direction.

Bullets zipped past his head, then splattered dirt and small stones on the ground. Damn, he thought, they are finding me. He crossed the last twenty feet before the dark green foliage began. He couldn’t see Kim anymore which meant she was already under cover.

Just as he was getting to safety Dan heard that deadly sound. So close, he had milliseconds to analyse it. An instinct made him drop to the ground, but even then he was late. A searing pain lanced across his shoulders, and he stumbled. He fell heavily on the ground, and luckily for him, behind a thick tree stump. Bullets thundered around him, thudding into the tree.

“Dan. Over here!” It was Kim’s voice. Dan closed his eyes and opened them. Well, he could still hear and see. That was close enough to being alive. He felt a stickiness in his back, and recognized the warmth of blood.

“Dan.” The voice was closer now. He could see Kim’s outline in the heavy bush.

“Stay away,” Dan shouted. Bullets still whined around him. With a superhuman effort, he raised himself up. He ran towards Kim. A massive tree trunk lay felled on the ground. He climbed over, and joined Kim on the other side. He leaned against the brown trunk, sweat pouring down his face.
